Accelerators and Obstacles of Labor Market Integration of Asian Professionals in Korea

Like migratory birds, Foreign professionals have the ability to cross the border by using their skills, qualifications, and work experiences. After relocation, they use their human and social capital to overcome difficulties and to integrate into the labor market and host society. The four-year project led by Dr. Joohyun Justine Park focuses on the work and social life of Asian foreign professionals in Korea. This project aims to identify structural and inter/intra-personal factors that promote or hinder migrants’  job market integration and life satisfaction from the perspective of positive psychology.

With the perspective that migrants as agents can devise tactics and strategies to make the situation better, Justine will go in-depth to examine migrants’ decisions and actions in difficult circumstances. In order to critically understand migrants’ hurdles, she will use an intersectionality approach to examine how gender, race, class, and skill have an influence on the adaptation and integration process. Justine will use a sequential exploratory mixed-method research design. During her fieldwork between 2021 and 2023, hosted by Migration Research and Training Center in Korea, she will conduct qualitative interviews and ethnographic filming with East Asian skilled migrants. In the last fieldwork in 2023, as a director of quantitative research, she will lead a cross-sectional online survey targeting Asian skilled migrants in Asian countries.
